Dutch Iris are fully hardy, with tall stems and versatile enough to grace any type of garden from ultra modern to cottage style.

Iris germanica (commonly known as Bearded Irises) are often referred to as Iris bulbs but they grow from fleshy rhizomes and are planted differently from other Iris bulbs, (they lie on top of the soil rather than buried beneath it). Lay the Iris rhizomes horizontally and plant them very shallowly in a sunny site to encourage strong, free flowering plants. Iris germanica  have elegant flowers that appear in early summer. They may look exotic and delicate, but they are extremely hardy and once planted they'll come back every year.

Miniature Iris are hardy dwarf irises which are a guaranteed way of adding colour to the front of a sunny border or a patio pot.

Iris Bulbs FAQs

Take a look at some of the frequently asked questions we receive from those looking to buy Iris Bulbs in the UK. You can contact our Customer Service Team or browse our general FAQs for further advice.

When to plant Iris Bulbs

Iris bulbs are best planted in late summer to early autumn, typically between August and October. Planting during this time allows the bulbs to establish roots before winter, ensuring they are ready to bloom in the spring.

How to Plant Iris Bulbs

To plant iris bulbs, choose a sunny or partially shaded location with well-drained soil. Prepare the soil by loosening it and adding compost or well-rotted manure. Plant the bulbs about 10-12 cm deep and 10-15 cm apart. Place the bulbs in the holes with the pointed end facing up, cover with soil, and firm gently. Water thoroughly after planting. Mulching helps retain moisture and protect the bulbs from extreme cold.

How long do Iris Bulbs take to grow

Iris bulbs typically take a few weeks to establish roots and begin growing. They will bloom in the spring, usually within 12-16 weeks after planting. Proper care, including regular watering and feeding, will promote healthy growth and vibrant blooms.

Why Grow Iris Bulbs?

Growing iris bulbs adds stunning colour and elegance to your garden. These hardy perennials produce striking, sword-like foliage and beautiful flowers in a variety of colours, including blue, purple, yellow, and white. Irises are relatively low-maintenance and can thrive in a range of soil conditions. Their unique blooms and attractive foliage make them a standout feature in any garden.

Where can you grow Iris Bulbs?

Iris bulbs thrive in sunny to partially shaded locations with well-drained soil. They are suitable for garden beds, borders, rockeries, and containers. Irises can also be planted near water features, where their striking blooms will reflect beautifully.
