Support the Huntington's Disease Association with Amaryllis 'Flamenco Queen'

Our partnership

We are delighted to be partnering with Marshalls Garden for a second year after the success of selling the Hercules Amaryllis in 2021. Last year, we sold 418 plants raising in excess of £1500. This year we’re aiming to sell 1000 Amaryllis with a fundraising target of £4000.

The Huntington’s community leapt at the chance to purchase last year’s amaryllis, leaving fantastic feedback once their flowers had bloomed. Some comments from the community included -
‘Mine has been a real joy! Second bud on its way, brilliant fundraiser.’
‘We had some great blooms and hope this fundraiser happens next year as well!’
'Really beautiful, thank you.’

We’re so excited to bring you a fantastic Flamenco Queen Amaryllis bulb for 2021. This stunning flower is the perfect Christmas gift for a loved one that will bloom in January/February 2022, welcoming you into the new year and adding a splash of colour to your home during those winter months. Purchasing this flower helps raise awareness and important funds to support those affected by Huntington’s disease.

Our 50th Anniversary

2021 is a very special year for the Huntington’s Disease Association as we celebrate our 50th anniversary. The Flamenco Queen Amaryllis was chosen to commemorate the Huntington’s Disease Association’s 50 years of offering support, advice and guidance to those affected by Huntington’s disease in England and Wales. In 1971, five families affected by Huntington’s met up for the very first time, this was probably the first-ever meeting of Huntington’s disease families in the UK. From those early beginnings, the Huntington’s Disease Association was born and now supports over 4000 people affected by the disease.

What is Huntington's disease?

Huntington’s disease is a rare neurological disorder that affects the central nervous system and is caused by a faulty gene passed down through families. If one parent has the disease, each child has a 50% chance of inheriting it. There are around 8,000 people in the UK with Huntington’s and around 32,000 at risk of developing it.

Who are the Huntington’s Disease Association?

We are the national charity providing essential services to people who are affected by Huntington’s across England and Wales. These services include; a specialist advisory service, online support via social channels and website, funding of selected research studies and projects, local branches and support groups, events and activities for families and people affected by the disease and training/events for professionals.

We rely almost entirely on voluntary donations through the generosity of our supporters, that’s why opportunities like our partnership with Marshalls Garden is so important.

Why an amaryllis?

The amaryllis is used as a logo across many Huntington’s disease charities worldwide. It is not only a beautiful flower, but it also represents the passion and drive the Huntington’s community exudes every day - from carers who do their utmost to support their loved ones, to young people living in a Huntington’s family, people who are presymptomatic or at risk and all those with the disease who demonstrate resilience, love and care.
