Starbursts of long, pointed leaves edged with tiny soft crocodile-like teeth make Aloe vera a striking addition to any room.

Known as ‘the plant of immorality’ to the ancient Egyptians, this succulent is renowned for having medicinal properties too, leading some to call it the ‘First Aid Plant’.

Cleopatra is said to have used it as part of her beauty regimen more than 2,000 years ago and today it’s an ingredient in remedies for sunburn and indigestion and in cosmetic products.

Aloe vera, also known as the Barbados aloe, holds the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit and is easy to care for. It’s a slow grower, reaching around 0.6 metres in height, and in the right conditions, it may produce spikes of greenish-yellow flowers in early summer.

This plant can be enjoyed in a conservatory or other bright rooms in which the temperature does not fall below 13C but keep out of the direct sun and away from radiators and draughts. Be aware that Aloe vera can be toxic to pets.

Water occasionally during the warmer months and little over winter when the plant is dormant. Feed two or three times over the summer.

Take care not to overwater aloes, which can lead to drooping leaves, while too much direct sun can cause brown spots. Dark shrivelled leaves can be caused by a lack of sunlight or low temperatures.

Aloes are easy to care for: wipe leaves to remove dust and take it outside in summer, although keep it out of direct sun. Remove any damaged leaves. Repot your aloe if it gets too big and separate and repot any offsets.
