With pink-tinged, deep orange flowers on tall, strong stems, Antirrhinum ‘Potomac Dark Orange’ looks fantastic both in the border or in a vase. This cottage garden favourite flowers from late spring right through to early autumn if regularly deadheaded – an excellent reason to keep picking flowers for the house.

Sow indoors

February-April: Sow in a greenhouse or windowsill propagator in trays filled with seed compost, pressing the seed lightly into the surface of the compost. Keep at 15-20°C (60-68°F) until seeds have germinated. Transplant seedlings into trays, spacing them 5cm (2in) apart, and grow on.

Plant out

June: Plant out into the permanent position 30cm (12in) apart.

Tips

Deadhead regularly to prolong the flowering period.
