Enjoy asparagus Burgundine, a new, purple variety great for home-growing and bred for super-tender spears. Every plant produces attractive and tasty spears that contain less lignin, a component in plants that creates tough, stringy stems. 10 plants fill a 5m (16 ½ ft) row, perfect for an average row on the vegetable plot.
Your spears are tender and palatable; to such a degree you can enjoy them raw or chopped up as an exciting salad ingredient. Asparagus Burgundine is just so versatile. You can even use it to accompany your favourite dishes. Why not enjoy the spears steamed or sautéed.
We suggest you leave your crowns to settle in the first season to let your plants establish. In this first season, they will put down a good set of roots to support healthy spears that increase in number from year to year.
Crown Age and Bed Establishment
These crowns are 1 year old and will be in their 2nd year as you plant them this spring. Usually, an asparagus bed takes 3 years to start to be productive if planted with crowns. Best not to harvest any spears in year 1 and maybe 2. If in year 2 there are a lot of spears then the bed is productive, if only a handful, do not cut them and leave them in the ground. The reason for doing this is the energy of the plant needs to be focussed on increasing root volume and getting established, rather than energy into spear production. If you keep cutting the spears the plant will naturally want to produce more, rather than producing roots. This will in the long term produce a stronger plant and will produce heavier crops in subsequent seasons.
