- Perennial crop
- Green or white spears to your tastes
- Disease tolerant
There are so many top-chefs that are fans of freshly home-grown asparagus and it’s not surprising seeing as asparagus is a reliable perennial – putting up more and more spears each year.
Vittoria is a great vegetable to grow, as you get to choose white spears or green spears to suit your tastes.
Vittorio is a robust male hybrid variety that has a naturally strong and vigorous growth habit. Having been bred to resist disease it’s a reliable variety that has a particularly early season.
Expect to harvest straight, smooth spears that are low in tough-fibres and have tight, closed tips for lovely asparagus salads or garnishes for summer meals.
If you want extra-tender snow-white spears simply mound the soil up around them. In early summer, remove the mounded- soil and harvest the blanched spears.
Tips for superior spears
Simply plant four-to five crowns per lineal metre, and 30cm (12in) apart if planting double rows.
For handsome harvests in the second and subsequent years, keep cropping in the first year to a minimum.
