Tough and attractive in equal measure, Clusia rosea is a born survivor and easy to care for.

This plant’s glossy leather-like rounded leaves are so tough that people used to carve their names into them, leading to the nickname ‘the autograph tree’.

Nowadays its good looks and tall, slender shape means it’s a highly sought-after houseplant, bringing a touch of Caribbean magic to rooms.

Grow in a bright, sunny room, including humid bathrooms and kitchens, and make sure the temperature does not fall below 10C. Avoid placing too near to radiators and draughts and keep out of the way of children and animals as the sap from Clusia can be an irritant.

Water regularly over spring and summer, allowing the compost to almost dry out in between, and feed with diluted fertiliser from March to September. Wipe the leaves of Clusia to remove dust and mist regularly to create a tropical environment. Extra humidity can be provided by placing this plant on a tray of pebbles and water.

In the right conditions this evergreen plant produces pink or white flowers in summer, followed by small green fruits that ripen to produce bright red seeds, which are toxic.

You will also receive an easy to use 30ml houseplant droplet feeder specially formulated to keep them happy and healthy looking for much longer. Simply snap off the tip and stick it into your plant pot to feed your plant for up to one month.
