Berberis thunbergii are spiny deciduous shrubs grown for their small brightly coloured flowers in spring and coloured foliage which turns vivid red or orange in autumn. Berberis thunbergii ‘Orange Rocket’ is a small upright shrub with yellow flowers attractive to pollinators and small flame red leaves which deepen to ruby in the autumn when it also bears bright red berries.. .

Plant Berberis thunbergii ‘Orange Rocket’ in a sunny position to maintain good foliage colour. Grow on the patio in a container or make a feature of it in the border alongside other plants with red leaves such as Nandina domestica ‘Fire Power’ or purple leaves like Loropetalum chinense. It can grow to 1.5 metres high and 50cm wide.

Can’t plant straight away?

Place in a sheltered spot and water regularly to keep the compost moist.

Dig a hole approximately twice as deep and 3 times as wide as the plant’s rootball. If your soil is heavy mix in a soil improver before backfilling. Firm the soil around the plant and water thoroughly.
