With an RHS Award of Garden Merit, this is a sprout that’s a must for your vegetable collection. Producing heavy yields, sow in spring to get rewarding harvests in late winter when other greens are scarce.
Sow in modules indoors in April and May, and transplant into the ground in late May. Apply general fertiliser to the soil beforehand to put the plants in good stead before the main growing season. Be sure to space individual plants 60cm/2 ft apart for bigger sprouts that give a hearty, nutty flavour.
Then throughout the growing season, water well. You can keep pesky cabbage white butterflies and birds away by applying netting to ensure this sprout’s naturally robust growth.
In late winter, you’ll find you can pick the well-spaced and numerous sprouts when other greens are scarce and add the full-flavoured vegetables to hearty dishes.
