Description

  • Fragrant fruits in late summer
  • Suitable for hedging

Chaenomeles, or ornamental quince, are spiny-stemmed deciduous shrubs with small serrated leaves. Their colourful flower clusters emerge just before the leaves and continue to bloom for several months from late winter until March and April followed in late summer by fragrant fruits which can be made into preserves or compotes. Chaenomeles sup. ‘Orange Trail’ has tangerine orange flowers centred with bright yellow anthers then, in late summer, pink tinged green fruit.

Position Chaenomeles sup. ‘Orange Trail’ in a sunny spot for more profuse flowers and fruit, planting into moist, but well-drained soil. Chaenomeles sup. ‘Orange Trail’ creates a pretty but effective flowering hedge about 80cm to 1 metre high. Plant 3 to 4 plants per metre, then maintain by trimming the sides and shortening long top stems.

Can’t plant straight away?

Place in a sheltered spot and water regularly to keep the compost moist.
