Description
- Deciduous tree
- Heart-shaped leaves
- Large white bracts in May
- Sun or part shade
- RHS Award of Garden Merit
When, in May, Davidia involucrata is festooned with pairs of showy white bracts resembling what appear to be hankies drying, it is easy to understand why its common name is the handkerchief tree. The undersides of its large heart-shaped, mid-green leaves are covered in a soft down.
Cultivate this unique deciduous tree in a sunny or partly shaded site in fertile moist well-drained soil, sheltered from strong winds. A mature Davidia involucrata can reach a height of 15 metres and have a spread of up to 10 metres.
How you will receive your plants:
Selected by our team of experts and sent from our nursery, you will receive your plant in a 9cm pot, ready to plant out.
Can’t plant straight away?
Place in a sheltered spot and water regularly to keep the compost moist.
Dig a hole approximately twice as deep and 3 times as wide as the plant’s rootball. If your soil is heavy mix in a soil improver before backfilling. Firm the soil around the plant and water thoroughly.
Water shrubs regularly in the first year after planting and in dry periods
