How you will receive your bulbs:
Selected by our team of experts and sent from our nursery, you will receive your bulbs in a breathable mesh bag. This is to keep the bulbs together in a pack that is nice and airy – perfect to keep the bulbs healthy while in transit.
Can’t plant straight away?
Keep your bulbs in a cool, light, and dry place and preferably hanging on a hook so that air can get to the bulbs at all angles. Ideally, you should aim to plant your bulbs within a week of receiving them, but if this is not possible, store them in a cool, dark place until you are ready to plant them.
Planting tips and hints:
Planting in the ground: Plant in April or May after the frosts are over. Plant in a sunny, sheltered position in a well-drained soil. Dig a hole with a trowel between 15-20cm deep. Plant bulbs approximately 15cm apart. Add a few handfuls of grit to the hole, then place the bulb on top of the grit with its pointed tip facing upwards and backfill the hole with soil.
Planting in containers: Plant in early spring in containers filled with a loam-based compost such as John Innes no 3, mixed with plenty of grit to aid drainage (allow 2 parts compost to 1 part grit). Plant bulbs so that the tips are just below the surface of the compost, spaced 7-15cm apart.
Feeding and aftercare: Water pot-grown plants regularly during the growing season. Feed with a general purpose fertiliser in spring, and apply a high-potash feed like liquid tomato fertiliser once or twice in summer. Remove faded flowerstems and leaves once they turn yellow. Mulch bulbs thickly with bark in autumn to protect them from frost and move container-grown bulbs into a frost-free place. Stop watering in autumn and start again in spring.
