To ensure your tree stays looking its best right through the festive season, follow these simple steps:
- When your tree arrives, take it out of the box, remove the netting and shake the tree to get rid of any old loose needles from previous seasons.
- Using a sharp saw, cut 2.5cm/1in off the base of the trunk, then immediately place the tree in a bucket of fresh water and keep it outside or somewhere cool for at least 24 hours to allow it to rehydrate.
- Before bringing the tree inside, check that it fits into your selected stand provided, turning the trunk to position it so that no low branches prevent it fitting into your stand. If this isn’t possible, remove low branches as necessary but try to do this without affecting the overall shape of the tree.
- Choose a position for your tree away from fires or radiators, as these will dry out the tree and increase needle drop. Once a site has been chosen, bring the tree inside, place it into your selected stand.
- Once the tree is in position and straight from all sides, fill the water reservoir with 2.5L (5 pints) of water. Check the water level every day by slipping a finger down the side of your stand and top up as necessary. An average (6') size tree can take up to 500ml/1 pint of water a day depending on how warm you keep your home.
- After Christmas your tree can easily be recycled and composted within your local council scheme. For every tree that is purchased a further 1.5 trees are planted.
