Popular aromatic herb Peppermint has a delicious fresh flavour with a wide range of uses, from teas and sweet sauces to refreshing summer drinks. Best grown in a pot so that it won’t become invasive, it’s a must for every herb garden and the vivid purple flowers are very attractive to pollinators.

Sow indoors

Sow thinly in trays of firm pre-watered compost and cover lightly with vermiculite or sieved compost. Place in warmth, 15-20°C and keep moist at all times.

Grow on

Keep seedlings in a light position but shade from direct sunlight. When large enough to handle, transplant into trays or pots of potting compost.

Plant out

Gradually accustom plants to outside conditions before planting out in a sunny spot, 30cm apart when risk of frost has passed. Water well until established. Alternatively, plant or sow directly into a container.

Advice

Mint has a tendency to spread. Grow in pots to restrict its spread (the pots can be buried in the ground).
