Description

  • Blue flowerheads in summer
  • Deciduous shrub
  • Good for shady gardens
  • Grow in acid soils for blue flowers
Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Blue’ is an eyecatching sight in summer, producing big blue flowerheads when planted in acidic soils. This medium-sized deciduous shrub forms a rounded mound of large green leaves and prefers a moist, well drained soil in part shade, although it will grow in full sun if watered regularly.

The flower colour will change depending on the soil’s acidity or alkalinity. Hydrangea macrophylla produces blue flowers in acidic soil and pink flowers in alkaline soil.

Water regularly in dry periods to make sure the soil does not dry out.

Leave the faded flowerheads on the plant over winter to protect the new buds, and remove them in spring, cutting back flowered stems to just above a strong pair of buds lower down the stem.

Prune established plants in spring, cutting one in every four old stems down to the base to promote new growth.
