Hymenocallis ‘Sulphur Queen’ produces fabulously fragrant sulphur-yellow trumpet flowers on tall stems in summer. With up to 6 flowers per stem, this summer-flowering bulb looks spectacular in a sunny, sheltered spot outdoors, or in a conservatory. Called the ‘spider lily’ for its elegant flowers with their long slender petals around a central trumpet, it’s sure to be a hit in your garden this summer.
How you will receive your bulbs:
Selected by our team of experts and sent from our nursery, you will receive your bulbs in a breathable mesh bag. This is to keep the bulbs together in a pack that is nice and airy – perfect to keep the bulbs healthy while in transit.
Can’t plant straight away?
Keep your bulbs in a cool, light, and dry place and preferably hanging on a hook so that air can get to the bulbs at all angles. Ideally, you should aim to plant your bulbs within a week of receiving them, but if this is not possible, store them in a cool, dark place until you are ready to plant them.
Planting tips and hints:
Planting in the ground: Plant outdoors in late spring once all risk of frost is past, in a moist but well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade. Plant the bulbs shallowly, spaced 10-15 (4-6in) cm apart with the tops of the bulbs exposed above the ground. Water after planting.
Planting in containers:
Plant the bulbs in pots indoors in March or April. Fill pots with a loam-based compost like John Innes No. 2. Space corms 20cm (8in) apart, with the tops of the bulbs exposed. Water regularly and keep indoor pots in a cool, bright, frost-free place and move outdoors after all risk of frost is past.
Feeding and aftercare:. Water regularly during the growing season and feed fortnightly with a dilute balanced liquid feed. Stop watering once the leaves start to fade. Once the foliage has faded in autumn, lift the corms, and store in a cool, dry, frost-free place indoors in trays filled with sand, or move container-grown plants into a frost-free place over winter. *Planting and flowering months below are subject to seasonal weather conditions.
