This colourful mix of curly kale will add a real zing to your dinner plate. Eat thinnings (the seedlings you take out to give remaining seedlings room to grow) as baby leaf salad.

Thin plants again in a few weeks’ time using young leaves in salads allowing some plants to mature to full colour where the leaves can be used in salads, stir fries, steamed or even juiced to extract all the leafy green nutrients.

Kale is an excellent superfood, packed full of nutrients with powerful antioxidant properties, plus it is anti-inflammatory to help stave allergic reactions. Colourful N Curly Mix is high in vitamins K, A and C, lutein and a good source of calcium.

How to Guide

Sow indoors

March-April: Sow thinly 2.5cm (1in) deep in clean trays or singly in modules filled with moist firm compost.

 

Sow outdoors

May-August: Sow thinly 2.5cm (1in) deep and 5cm (2in) apart on a moist seed bed. Keep soil moist at all times.  Thin to 7cm (3in).

 

Plant out

May. 45cm (18in) apart and 60cm (24in) between each row. Keep soil moist.

 

Tips

Put one or two kales in an ornamental bed as an attractive partner to your flowers. Leaves intensify in colour in the autumn.
