Sow indoors

February-April: Level fill a tray with compost firming with the base of another tray. Water well with a fine rose. Scatter seeds thinly over the surface, lightly covering with a little more compost or in vermiculite. Place in a propagator at 15-18°C (60-65°F) or cover tray with cling film and leave in a warm room. When shoots appear, remove cling film. Keep seedlings in a light position, but shade from direct sunlight with compost which is moist to touch. When plants are 5cm (2in) tall, transplant 5cm (2in) apart into small pots or module trays. Grow on in a minimum temperature of 10°C (50°F)

Sow outdoors

April: Prepare the ground by digging, firming soil and raking level. Scatter seeds where they are to flower and rake to lightly cover the seed. Water with a fine rose and keep moist until seedlings germinate. When large enough to handle thin to avoid overcrowding.

Plant out

June: Gradually accustom plants to outside conditions for 2-3 weeks before planting out from early summer onwards. Allow 60cm (24in) between plants.

Tips

Autumn sowings require over-wintering in a cold greenhouse but will supply flowers earlier than spring-sown plants.
