A beautiful climbing lilac-purple sweet pea flower, charming in its simplicity and beautifully fragrant. Named in memory of keen gardener and much-loved mum Mary Lou Heard. Heirloom type
Grow this beautiful variety with other climbing sweet peas in a range of different colours. Perfect for cutting for vases, choose a short decorative glass vase to house your flowers of sweet pea Mary Lou Heard.
Grow sweet pea Mary Lou Heard up obelisks in the centre or towards the back of flower beds. Alternatively plant up trellised walls and under-plant with tulips and other spring bulbs.
Place canes or a trellis above where you want to sow your sweet peas. Your seed pack will tell you how far apart to sow seeds. Position two seeds at each station and pick out the weakest seedling when the two start to grow, leaving the strongest seed to grow on.
If you want your sweet pea seeds to germinate quickly you can put down a horticultural fleece over the soil – this helps retain the heat in the soil, and doubles up as protection from hungry seed-eating mice.
