Description
- Softneck variety
- Flavoursome
Enjoy the rewarding harvests of full-flavoured large garlics with outstanding vigour. Simply plant them up in free-draining soil 6in (15cm) apart and 1-2in (2-5cm) deep and leave them over winter. Water from April and expect handsome harvests from July.
Two full bulbs give around 20 cloves for planting which produce 20 full bulbs in summer the following year. That works out to be around 25p for every bulb of home-grown and flavoursome garlic.
Softneck and Hardneck Varieties
Garlic varieties can be classified into 2 distinct types, namely ‘Hardneck’ and ‘Softneck’.
The key distinction between hardneck and softneck varieties lies in their hardiness level. Hardneck types are very hardy, whereas softneck types are slightly less so. Interestingly, this translates to better storage capabilities for softneck varieties. The hardiness of hardneck types can be attributed to their closer relation to wild varieties.
Softneck varieties are often milder in flavour and easier to braid into bunches for storing.
'Hardneck' garlics boast a richer flavour and thrive in cold temperatures. They also produce a long flowering stem, called a 'Scape', which should be removed early to prevent energy from being diverted towards producing smaller bulbs. The scapes are easily identifiable by their curling form.
Both types thrive in the UK, but consider seeking out the Hardneck variety if you reside in the far North.
How you receive your garlic bulbs
Your garlic bulbs arrive to you in mesh bags so the individual bulbs are kept nicely together while air can get to them freely. This keeps them in the best condition they can be when they arrive to you.
Can’t plant straight away?
Garlic bulbs store really well given the right conditions. All you need to do is make sure they are kept in their mesh bags and hung up in a cool, dry place with good air circulation. A semi-heated or connected garage or a loft is perfect. Look to plant within a month.

How to Guide
Planting Garlic
Prepare the ground with our Pre-Planting Onion, Garlic & Shallot Fertiliser to ensure strong bulb development and growth, early ripening and maturity, good skin and bulb firmness.
Place the cloves in the soil with their tips around 2.5cm (1in) below the surface. Space them about 15cm (6 inches) apart. Keep rows around 30cm (12 inches) apart.
If the weather is particularly wet, or soil very heavy, start cloves in modules in a greenhouse or under other protection until conditions improve.
