Onion ‘Autumn Champion’ lives up to its name as one of the best for autumn planting. This popular variety produces early harvests of firm round onions with golden-brown skins and a mild flavour. It’s ideal for cooking and pickling, and will store well for months, lasting until mid-December.

How you will receive your plants:

Selected by our team of experts and sent from our nursery, you will receive autumn-planting onion and shallot sets from late September, and spring-planting sets from mid-January, in a breathable net bag. This keeps the sets together in a pack that is nice and airy – perfect to keep them healthy while in transit.

Can’t plant straight away?

Keep your onion or shallot sets in a cool, dark, and dry place and preferably hanging on a hook so that air can get to the bulbs at all angles. Ideally, you should aim to plant your sets within a week of receiving them, but if this is not possible, store them in a cool, dark place until you are ready to plant them.

Planting tips and hints:

Dig over the soil with a shovel to clear weeds. A couple of weeks before planting, rake in chicken manure pellets.

Push the sets into the soil with pointed end upwards and the tips just showing above the soil. Space onions 5-10cm apart and shallots 15-20cm apart. Water in after planting and cover the area with horticultural fleece to protect the young plants from birds.

Water regularly in dry periods. Remove any flowerspikes that appear. Stop watering once the leaves start to yellow.

Harvest bulbs once the leaves have turned yellow and flopped over. Use a fork to carefully lift the bulbs.
