Nothing beats the earthiness of growing your own onions, and the satisfaction of putting them into a home-cooked meal is something to be proud of.
We have developed a fantastic, autumn-planting, tri-colour onion collection, specially bred to withstand our UK winters. This trio-collection is ideal for planting in a large space like an allotment, or to share amongst friends and each grow a variety in a smaller space.
In this collection you will find:
- Onion Snowball which has attractive round bulbs and a mild delicate flavour, making them perfect for eating fresh.
- Onion Red Cross is a large red skinned bulb. It has crisp white flesh with defined red rings when sliced into. This onion is the perfect accompaniment to any salad.
- Onion Radar is an improved Japanese variety with a mild flavour which can be stored for up to a year in the right conditions, a firm favourite with our customers.
You can harvest your onions up to three weeks earlier than some of the spring-planting varieties and continue to harvest them all summer long. Build up a reserve ready for the autumn and winter as these onions do not lose any flavour whilst being stored, meaning you can enhance more of your favourite recipes all year round.
For the best results, onions should be grown in a sunny site and can be placed in any type of soil as long as it is free draining. They are a hardy vegetable and will attract bees, birds butterflies and more to your garden.
