Milder and sweeter than red onions, white onions are delicious raw in salads, sandwiches and fresh salsa. They’re also widely used in French dishes, especially the classic French onion soup. Grow your own and try them for yourself!

Our growers will choose your sets from our range of top-performing white onion varieties. While we can’t specify which variety will be chosen, you can be sure of receiving high-yielding, great-tasting white onion sets at great value for money.

How you will receive your plants:

Selected by our team of experts and sent from our nursery, you will receive your onion sets in a breathable net bag. This keeps them together in a pack that is nice and airy – perfect for keeping them healthy while in transit.

Can’t plant straight away?

Keep your onion sets in a cool, dark, and dry place and preferably hanging on a hook so that air can get to the bulbs at all angles. Ideally, you should aim to plant them within a week of receiving them, but if this is not possible, store them in a cool, dark place until you are ready to plant them.

Planting tips and hints:

A couple of weeks before planting, dig over the soil with a shovel to clear weeds. Rake in a general purpose fertiliser.

To plant your sets, push the sets into the soil with the pointed end upwards. Leave 5-10cm between sets. Cover the area with horticultural fleece to protect the young plants from birds.

Water regularly in dry periods, and weed regularly. Stop watering once the leaves start to yellow.

Harvest bulbs once the leaves have turned yellow and flopped over. Use a fork to carefully lift the bulbs.

How to Guide

Planting Onions and Shallots

Prepare the ground with our Pre-Planting Onion, Garlic & Shallot Fertiliser to ensure strong bulb development and growth, early ripening and maturity, good skin and bulb firmness.

Planting Sets:

Place onion and shallot sets in the soil with their pointed ends facing upwards. This ensures proper growth orientation.
Leave 5 to 10cm (2 to 4 inches) of space between individual onions and 15 to 20cm (6 to 8 inches) between shallots.
Create rows of onions with 25cm to 30cm (10 inches to 1 foot) of spacing between them. For shallots, allow 30 to 45cm (1 foot to 18 inches) between rows.

Planting Onion Plants:

Utilise a dibber to create holes in the soil that are the same depth as the plants' original root depth in their cell tray.
Place the plants into the holes, ensuring they sit at the same depth they were in their cell tray.
Gently water the area to facilitate proper settling of the plants into the soil.
