Description
- Grow in isolation- you still get a good crop of fruit
- Grow in a bed or large pot to suit
- Perfect for eating or juicing
- Suitable for small spaces
- Rootstock M9, which is a dwarfing rootstock. Without routine pruning, the plant can grow up to 2-2.5m in height.
Enjoy the harvests of apple Elstar producing fruit that has the perfect sweet and sharp balance, delicious to eat straight from the tree or juiced for thirst-quenching home-made apple juice.
Elstar produces heavy, regular crops of apples which are greenish-yellow, flushed with red. The flavour and texture are honeyed and crisp with a satisfying bite.
These trees have been grown and pruned to keep a compact shape, suitable for small spaces or grown in containers. Each winter, when the plant is dormant prune out any dead, diseased or damaged branches to a healthy bud. Cut back this seasons growth by 1/4 to an outward facing healthy bud. You can remove the tallest central branch, 'The Leader' to encourage side shoots and keep the height of the tree short.
We recommend that you grow your Elstar tree near other fruit and fruiting vegetables like tomatoes for optimum flower pollination and increase the chances of all flowers setting to fruit.
This 2 year old specimen is NOT self fertile and will require another pollinator in the same flowering group as Elstar, group 3.
During summer delivery, our plants may exhibit signs of nature's hustle and bustle on their leaves. Since we have a high concentration of plants on the nursery, a variety of insects are drawn to them as a source of food and nutrition. We feel that this is all part of gardening and have to strike a balance between keeping the plants healthy for our customers and not interfering too much with natural lifecycles.
We try to use as many natural methods of control as possible and only intervene as a last resort. So you may see some leaves that are discoloured or with small areas where the insects have been eating them. Any high levels of damage or attack will have been dealt with prior to delivery and plants graded out as best as possible when selected for packing. No plants will be delivered with damage that will affect the future growth or success of harvest.
If you can't plant up your fruit tree straight away we recommend that you keep your potted plant in a sunny position and keep the soil moist by watering each day. Look to planting into its permanent position within 5-7 days.
