This patio crab apple is a dwarf variety of Malus ‘Liset’, a very showy crab apple with purple spring foliage that sets off dark buds that open into deep rose-pink flowers. The foliage changes to bronze-green in summer, and the flowers are followed by dark red fruits in autumn which last well into winter.

This dwarf variety has good disease resistance and is ideal for growing in a large container.

Plant in a large container, at least 50cm in diameter, placed on pot feet to minimize waterlogging and filled with a mixture of ordinary soil and a loam-based compost such as John Innes no 3, plus plenty of potting grit to improve drainage.

Water regularly, and feed fortnightly in spring and summer with a high-potash feed like tomato feed.

Wrap the containers in hessian or bubble-wrap over winter to protect the roots.

Prune lightly in late winter or early spring to remove any damaged or crossing branches.
