This columnar apple is perfect for a patio pot, with a single upright stem covered in beautiful pink flowers in spring followed by tasty fruits in autumn. An ideal fruit tree for small spaces, easy to harvest and prune.

Can’t plant straight away?
If you can’t plant your pillar patio fruit tree straight away, leave it in its pot in a sheltered spot and water regularly to stop the compost drying out.
Planting pillar patio trees in pots:
Choose a large pot, at least 30L (40cm diameter) and ideally 50L (55cm diameter), with good drainage holes. Place a layer of coarse gravel in the bottom of the pot to aid drainage. Avoid using black pots if possible as they will warm up too much in winter sunshine and can trigger the tree to start growing too early. Plant the tree in the pot using a loam-based compost like John Innes no 3. Apply a high-potash fertiliser in early spring.
Planting tips and hints:
To prune a pillar fruit tree, cut back all side shoots that are longer than 20cm to between 5-15cm long, cutting just above a bud. Prune once in late winter and again in mid-summer if growth is vigorous.
To test whether an apple is ready to harvest, cup it in your hand, lift and gently twist. If it comes away easily, it is ready to harvest.
