Description
Rhubarb is easy to grow for first time gardeners and experts alike. We love a collection at Marshalls and this Rhubarb Collection is no different. We have decided to put together three varieties that both taste amazing and will provide a high yield.
The rhubarb is an attractive hardy perennial with large leaves and pink, red or greenish stalks that are often used in pies and crumbles. The sweetness of the stem depends on the age of the stalks with most being picked during the spring. Why not get your hands on your own collection where you could grow:
- Rhubarb Victoria – The Victoria has greenish red stems with tender flesh and a brilliant balance of sweetness and acidity. This is a popular traditional variation that will produce a substantial crop once it has established and is symbolic of the British summer time.
- Rhubarb Timperley Early – The variety for the earliest outdoor crops and also suitable for gently forcing. Succulent pink stems with a delicious tart flavour.
- Rhubarb Fultons Strawberry Surprise – The Fulton is a durable and vigorous variety of rhubarb that produces flushes of attention-grabbing rich red stems that have a well-balanced acidity. It has also been voted best flavoured at the RHS Wisley trials and has won the RHS AGM.
We suggest that you plant your rhubarb collection in a place that has partial sunshine and shade, with soil that is fertile and free-draining. Able to withstand frost, this hardy, unique looking plant does not need a lot of attention but will provide you with and abundance of stalks full of vitamins and minerals.
