Description
- RHS Award of Garden Merit
- Early harvests, ready in winter
- The perfect comfort food for making winter desserts
- Forcing variety for tender, sweeter young stems
The variety for the earliest outdoor crops and also suitable for gently forcing. Timperley Early is a popular variety for home-growers on account of its readiness for eating as early as February.
February is a great month for harvesting rhubarb as it's cold outside and hot stewed rhubarb is comfort food, great for preparing in the kitchen.
Grow in rich, moist compost: the roots of your rhubarb crowns will appreciate the nutrients in abundance and promote thick healthy stems, pink, tart and full of flavour.
If harvesting stalks in the first year, pick sparingly so that the remaining stalks give your crowns enough power to generate stronger on-going plants in subsequent years that give you many more stalks.
How you will receive your plants:
Selected by our team of experts and sent from our nursery, you will receive your plant in a pot from March onwards, ready to plant out.
Can’t plant straight away?
Place in a sunny, sheltered spot and water regularly to keep the compost moist
Planting tips and hints:
Planting in the ground: Plant the crown so that the top is just visible above the surface of the soil, with the roots spread out. Space crowns around 75-90cm apart. Water well after planting.
Aftercare: Water well during dry periods and feed in summer with a general purpose fertiliser. Don’t harvest any stems in the first year, and only a few stems in the second year. After the second year, harvest as needed, stopping in July to allow the plant to build up reserves for the following year.
