The Sweet Box, Sarcococca hookeriana ‘Purple Stem’, has attributes that few other plants can match. Thriving in shade, it is not only colourful but also fragrant in winter. Initially purple-pink stems carry narrow, dark green leaves and sweetly scented white flowers, tinged pink. Pollinators love these winter flowers too, and the show continues with long-lasting, deep blue fruits. It’s manageable in size at around 1.5m height and spread and just requires trimming and tidying in early spring.

Planting tips and hints:

Dig a hole approximately twice as deep and 3 times as wide as the plant’s rootball. If your soil is heavy mix in a soil improver before backfilling. Firm the soil around the plant and water thoroughly.
