Description

Scabious ‘Fire King’ looks gorgeous in summer, with dramatic deep red pincushion flowers bobbing on long slender stems. A hardy annual very popular for wildflower and cottage garden planting, it looks beautiful in the border, attracting pollinators, and also makes a lovely cut flower.
Sow indoors
February-April: Almost fill a seed tray with moist seed compost. Sow seeds thinly over the surface, and lightly cover them with a little more compost. Place in the warmth 10-15°C (50- 60°F), and keep moist. After germination, keep seedlings in a light position, but shade from direct sunlight. When large enough to handle, transplant 5cm (2in) apart into trays of potting compost.
Plant out
May: Gradually accustom plants to outside conditions for 2-3 weeks before planting out when danger of frost has passed. Allow 45cm (18in) between plants.
Tips
Plant at the base of shrubs to allow its wiry flowering stems to meander through. Deadhead spent flowers regularly to encourage more blooms.
