Want to grow your own shallots but not sure which variety to choose? Let our experts do the work for you! Our Growers Pick Shallot Sets have been specially selected by our experts for excellent flavour and all-round performance. Each pack contains a minimum of 7 sets of the same variety.
Shallots are the perfect ingredient to choose when you want a hint of onion flavour without too much of a bite. With their mild, sweet flavour, they’re delicious eaten raw in salads, as a base for sauces or roasted until tender. Grow your own and you’ll never be short of this versatile staple!
Our growers will choose your sets from our range of top-performing shallot varieties. While we can’t specify which variety will be chosen, you can be sure of receiving high-yielding, great-tasting shallot sets at great value for money.
How you will receive your plants:
Selected by our team of experts and sent from our nursery, you will receive your shallot sets in a breathable net bag. This keeps them together in a pack that is nice and airy – perfect for keeping them healthy while in transit.
Can’t plant straight away?
Keep your shallot sets in a cool, dark, and dry place and preferably hanging on a hook so that air can get to the bulbs at all angles. Ideally, you should aim to plant them within a week of receiving them, but if this is not possible, store them in a cool, dark place until you are ready to plant them.
Planting tips and hints:
A couple of weeks before planting, dig over the soil with a shovel to clear weeds. Rake in a general purpose fertiliser.
To plant your sets, push the sets into the soil with the pointed end upwards. Leave 15-20cm between sets. Cover the area with horticultural fleece to protect the young plants from birds.
Water regularly in dry periods, and weed regularly. Stop watering once the leaves start to yellow.
Harvest bulbs once the leaves have turned yellow and flopped over. Use a fork to carefully lift the bulbs.
