Shallot Longor produces very long bulbs giving it the common name ‘banana shallot’ that have a fantastic sweet flavour. With copper-coloured skins, each set produces a cluster of up to nine bulbs and stores well. Great as a bulb vegetable to overwinter in your allotment. The cold winter will split the sets successfully so that up to nine bulbs develop from one set, ready to harvest in summer.
Plant these shallot sets in soil 18cm (7in) apart to a depth half their length with the tip protruding out of the soil that is ideally firm yet not compacted. Keep an eye on birds that can easily up-root the shallot sets and provide scaring-tactics if the problem ensues.
Ensure you keep the area weed-free so that shallots receive the maximum light, water and nutrients in the soil. Water well if temperatures increase rapidly in spring.
Shallots will be ready from June where each set will produce a cluster of up to nine bulbs each. In the kitchen, shallow fry shallot ‘Longor’ and serve with salmon for a lovely and light summer dish.
