Classy silver and green striped leaves with a vibrant purple underside allow Tradescantia zebrina to bring a touch of glamour to a room.

This plant’s trailing stems look great in hanging baskets or wall displays, or they can be trained to cascade over the edge of a shelf. Along with its eye-catching foliage, this plant occasionally produces clusters of purple flowers too.

Tradescantia zebrina, also known as ‘Silver Inch Plant’, holds the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit.

Grow Tradescantia on a windowsill or shelf or in a hanging basket to make the most of its trailing stems, which can reach 15cm. Tradescantia does well in most rooms and with various levels of light, including bathrooms. It comes from Mexico and loves a warm atmosphere. Make sure the temperature does not fall below 7C.

Water well from spring to autumn, allowing the top of the compost to dry in between, but less over winter. Repot in spring if it gets too big.

Shake leaves to remove dust and pinch out tips to encourage Tradescantia to be bushier. Mist regularly.

Variegated leaves turning green can indicate too little light. Brown and shriveled tips of leaves indicate the air is too dry.

You will also receive an easy-to-use 30ml houseplant droplet feeder specially formulated to keep them happy and healthy-looking for much longer. Simply snap off the tip and stick it into your plant pot to feed your plant for up to one month.
