Architectural, tough and attractive: Sansevieria has been loved for generations but is at home in the most modern of interiors.

Known by many in the UK as ‘Mother-in-law’s Tongue’, it’s a real focal point with its long, sword-like leaves with attractive patterning and a yellow edge.

This plant is easy to care for and happy in a variety of environments, and is even said to help improve air quality.

Slow-growing sansevierias can reach up to a metre in height, but will remain smaller if their roots are constrained. This plant is happy in bright sunshine or shade and in temperatures down to 10C. It can cope with dry air and draughts but will suffer if overwatered or allowed to get too cold.

Water carefully, providing a moderate amount between spring and autumn and very little over the winter.

Wipe the leaves with a damp cloth to remove dust.

Originally from West Africa, Sansevieria is also known as the snake plant.
