New Zealand spinach is an interesting alternative to spinach (although not related to it), forming a low, spreading bushy plant with ‘cut and come again’ green leaves. It’s easy to grow and can be cooked in the same way as spinach.

Sow outdoors

April-June: Soak seeds in cold water for 12 hours then sow 1cm (1⁄2in) deep in rows 30cm (12in) apart, direct in harvest position, into a well-prepared bed with added compost dug in.

Tips

Pinch out growing tips to encourage bushy growth. Harvest regularly once plants are large enough to pick.
