Sow indoors

April-May: Sow singly 2.5cm (1in) deep in individual pots or module trays of firm, pre-watered compost. Place in warmth of 18-21°C (65-70°F) until transplanting. Keep soil moist at all times.

Sow outdoors

May: Sow seeds 2.5cm (1in) deep in required harvest position. Sow in a block 45cm (18in) apart. Water well to establish plants. Keep soil moist at all times.

 Plant out

May-June: Harden off young plants before planting out in the required harvest position, in blocks of 4 x 3 plants. Protect from frost. Mulch plants and make sure they are stable. If roots begin to show at the surface, cover with more soil.

 Tips

Water well when in flower. They make a good windbreak for other veg plants.
