Bred by crossing raspberries with blackberries, tayberry bushes produce masses of long conical purple-red fruits with a delicious sweet flavour. Perfect for pies and desserts, they can also be frozen or eaten fresh.

Plant in a sunny site, in soil that has had plenty of organic matter (compost or well-rotted farmyard manure) dug in to improve soil structure.

Train canes against a wall, tying them back to horizontal support wires spaced 45cm (1/5ft) apart, or up a trellis.

Water plants regularly in dry spells.

Feed with a general purpose fertilizer in spring.

Cut back fruited canes to ground level in late autumn
