Zinnia ‘Whirlygig Improved’ is a superb mix of bicolour flowers in vibrant colours that keep coming for months in summer. This popular annual is great for pots and borders, loved by pollinators and ideal for cutting.
Sow indoors
March-April: Level fill a tray with seed compost firming with the base of another tray. Water well with a fine rose. Scatter seeds thinly over the surface lightly covering with ½ cm (¼ in) compost or vermiculite. Place in a propagator at 15-20°C (60-68°F) or cover tray with cling film and leave in a warm room. When shoots appear, remove cling film or ventilate propagator. Keep seedlings in a light position, but shade from direct sunlight with compost which is moist to touch. When plants are 5cm (2in) tall, transplant 5cm (2in) apart into small pots or module trays. Grow on in a minimum temperature of 10°C (50°F)
Sow outdoors
April-May: Sow seeds directly where they are to grow in soil that has been dug over and raked to a fine, crumbly texture. Sow thinly 3mm (1/8in) deep in rows 30cm (12in) apart. Water regularly. Thin seedlings to 23cm (9in) apart.
Plant out
May: Gradually accustom plants to outside conditions for 2-3 weeks before planting out when risk of frost has passed. Prepare the ground by digging in granular fertiliser or manure and raking level. Allow 20cm (8in) between plants. Water well until established.
Tips
Aftercare: Deadhead faded blooms to keep plants blooming for longer.
