Plant food FAQs
What is plant food?
Plant foods and fertilisers are organic and inorganic products that improve the vibrancy of plants by providing them with essential nutrients they need for growth.
Is plant food the same as fertiliser?
In essence, yes. Technically plants create their own 'food' via photosynthesis – like how we eat food to get the energy we need to fuel our growth. The terms plant 'food' and 'fertiliser' are often used interchangeably, while food is more commonly found on product names – perhaps as it better reflects how we use food for our health!
What is the best plant food?
Given there are so many feeds and fertilisers on the market, it can be head-spinning when trying to find the right plant food. Three elements are key for plants to grow and thrive: nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. Generally, plant foods will contain an even mix of all three, but you might find that plant-specific foods will change levels depending on what you want from the plant. Nitrogen helps leaf and shoot growth, phosphorus aids healthier and stronger roots, and potassium is a crucial element in flower and fruit production. Tomato fertiliser, for example, is typically high in potassium.
Can I use ericaceous plant food on all plants?
Ericaceous plants favour acidic soil conditions. Examples include blueberries, azaleas and rhododendrons. Using ericaceous feed and compost on other plants shouldn't cause too much harm if other conditions are in their favour. Alkaline-favouring plants like lily of the valley and lavender likely won't benefit, and using acidic products with them could hamper growth.
Can too much plant food kill plants?
Yes, over-fertilising plants can be one way of spoiling your crop. Excessive nutrients can scar the roots of your plants, leading to discoloured leaves, an inability to flower or fruit and, ultimately, the death of your plants. All the seeds and plants we send to you come with easy-to-follow instructions that include guidance on feeding and fertilising.
