When should I plant Begonia Tubers? 

Begonia tubers are best started indoors from February to April and planted outdoors after all risk of frost has passed, usually from late May onwards. Starting them early gives plants time to develop and results in earlier summer flowers. 

How do I plant Begonia Tubers? 

Place begonia tubers hollow side up in trays or pots filled with moist compost, leaving the top of the tuber just visible. Keep them in a bright, frost-free location and water sparingly until shoots appear. Once growth is established and frosts have passed, harden plants off and move them outdoors into containers, baskets or borders. 

Can Begonia Tubers be grown in pots and hanging baskets? 

Yes, begonia tubers are ideal for containers, patio pots, window boxes and hanging baskets. Trailing varieties are particularly well suited to baskets, where their colourful flowers can cascade over the edges, while upright varieties make excellent container and bedding plants. 

How long do Begonia Tubers flower for? 

Begonias are valued for their exceptionally long flowering season. Plants typically bloom from early summer until the first autumn frosts, providing months of continuous colour with minimal maintenance. 

Do Begonia Tubers come back every year? 

Yes. Tuberous begonias are perennial plants, but they are not frost hardy. In autumn, once the foliage has died back, lift the tubers, allow them to dry and store them in a cool, dry, frost-free place over winter. They can then be replanted the following spring.

Begonia tubers are perfect for containers, hanging baskets, window boxes, raised beds and summer bedding displays. Most varieties prefer a sheltered position in partial shade or dappled sun, although some modern varieties will tolerate sunnier conditions if kept well-watered.
