Pepper Plants FAQs

Take a look at some of the frequently asked questions we receive from those looking to buy Pepper Plants in the UK. You can contact our Customer Service Team or browse our general FAQs for further advice.

When to plant Pepper Plants

Pepper plants should be started indoors between January and April to ensure a long growing season. Sow seeds in a heated propagator or on a warm windowsill, as they require temperatures of 18–21°C to germinate. Once seedlings have grown strong, transplant them into larger pots and move them outdoors or into a greenhouse after the last frost, usually from late May to early June.

How to Plant Pepper Plants

Peppers thrive in warm, sunny locations with well-drained, fertile soil. If planting in the ground, enrich the soil with compost or well-rotted manure. For container growing, choose pots at least 20cm deep with good drainage. Space plants 30–45cm apart to allow for air circulation and strong growth. Provide support for taller varieties and feed regularly with a high-potassium fertilizer to encourage fruit production.

How long do Pepper Plants take to grow?

Pepper plants typically take 10 to 12 weeks from sowing to produce flowers and set fruit. Depending on the variety, peppers can be harvested from July onwards, with some earlier varieties ready as early as June. Regular picking encourages more fruiting, and plants will continue producing well into autumn if kept warm.

Why should I plant Pepper Plants?

Growing your own peppers allows you to enjoy fresh, organic produce with a superior flavour to store-bought varieties. Peppers are packed with vitamins A and C and are incredibly versatile in cooking, whether eaten raw in salads, roasted, or stir-fried. With a wide range of sweet and mildly spicy varieties, they make a colourful and rewarding addition to any garden.

Where can I plant Pepper Plants?

Peppers can be grown in greenhouses, polytunnels, or warm outdoor gardens. In cooler regions, they perform best in pots or containers that can be moved indoors when temperatures drop. A bright, sunny position with good airflow is essential for preventing disease and ensuring healthy fruiting.
