When to plant Brassica Plants
Brassica plants, including cabbage, kale, cauliflower, and Brussels sprouts, can be planted at different times of the year depending on the variety. Spring and summer crops, such as calabrese and summer cabbage, should be sown indoors from February to April and transplanted outdoors from April to June. Winter-hardy brassicas, like kale and Brussels sprouts, should be sown from April to June for planting out in summer and harvesting through autumn and winter.
How to Plant Brassica Plants
Brassicas thrive in well-drained, fertile soil with plenty of organic matter. Choose a sunny site with firm soil to support their heavy growth. Before planting, dig in compost or well-rotted manure to improve fertility. Space plants according to their variety—cabbages need around 40cm between plants, while Brussels sprouts require 60cm. Firm the soil around the base of each plant and water well after planting. Netting may be needed to protect young plants from pests such as cabbage white butterflies and pigeons.
How long do Brassica Plants take to grow?
Growth rates vary between brassica types. Fast-growing varieties, such as summer cabbages and calabrese, can be ready to harvest in as little as 10-12 weeks. Slower-growing types, including Brussels sprouts and winter cabbages, can take 5-7 months to mature. Many brassicas provide a long harvest window, ensuring a continuous supply of fresh produce.
Why should I plant Brassica Plants?
Brassicas are an essential part of any vegetable garden, offering a nutrient-rich, homegrown supply of greens throughout the year. They are packed with vitamins C and K, as well as fibre and antioxidants, making them an excellent choice for a healthy diet. Growing your own brassicas allows you to enjoy fresher, tastier vegetables while avoiding pesticides and unnecessary packaging. Many varieties are also cold-hardy, making them ideal for providing fresh produce during the winter months.
Where can I plant Brassica Plants?
Brassicas grow best in open, sunny locations with firm, well-drained soil. They are ideal for traditional vegetable gardens, raised beds, and allotments. Some compact varieties, such as dwarf kale, can also be grown in large containers. To prevent nutrient depletion and disease build-up, avoid planting brassicas in the same spot year after year—crop rotation is key to healthy growth.
