When to plant Asparagus Plants
The best time to plant asparagus in the UK is in early spring, typically from March to April, once the soil has warmed up but before the growing season begins. Planting during this time allows the crowns to establish in the soil as the weather continues to improve. Avoid planting when the ground is frozen or waterlogged to ensure healthy root development.
How to Plant Asparagus Plants
To plant asparagus, choose a sunny spot with well-drained, fertile soil and prepare it by removing weeds and enriching it with compost or well-rotted manure. Dig a trench approximately 30 cm (12 inches) wide and 20 cm (8 inches) deep. Create a ridge of soil down the centre of the trench and place the asparagus crowns on top, spreading the roots out evenly. Space the crowns 30–45 cm (12–18 inches) apart, with rows spaced 45–90 cm (18–36 inches) apart. Cover the crowns with 5–7 cm (2–3 inches) of soil, leaving the tips just visible, and water thoroughly. As the shoots grow, gradually fill in the trench with soil until it is level with the surrounding ground. Avoid harvesting during the first two years to allow the plants to establish fully.
How long do Asparagus Plants take to grow
Asparagus plants take 2 to 3 years to fully establish and produce a significant harvest. In the first year, the plants focus on developing strong root systems, and while some spears may appear, they should not be harvested to allow the plants to grow undisturbed. By the third year, the plants will produce a reliable crop, with harvesting typically lasting for 6 to 8 weeks each spring. Once established, asparagus plants can remain productive for 15 to 20 years with proper care.
Why Grow Asparagus Plants?
Growing asparagus plants is highly rewarding due to their delicious flavour, which is far superior when freshly harvested compared to store-bought alternatives. Asparagus is a perennial crop, meaning it will produce a reliable harvest every spring for up to 15–20 years once established, making it a long-term investment for your garden. It is also highly nutritious, being rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Asparagus plants are relatively low-maintenance after the initial establishment period and thrive in both vegetable gardens and allotments. Their feathery, ornamental foliage also adds visual interest, making them a versatile choice for gardeners.
Where can you grow Asparagus?
Asparagus can be grown in most areas of the UK, as long as you have a sunny spot with well-drained, fertile soil. It thrives in raised beds, allotments, and vegetable gardens, and is particularly well-suited to loamy or sandy soils. Asparagus prefers slightly alkaline soil, so it's helpful to incorporate lime if your soil is too acidic. It can also tolerate some light shade, but for the best results, plant it in full sun where it will receive plenty of light to encourage healthy growth. Avoid areas where water tends to pool, as asparagus doesn't like waterlogged conditions.
