When to sow Salvia Seeds

Salvia seeds are typically sown indoors from late winter to early spring. Starting seeds undercover allows young plants to develop before being planted outside after the risk of frost has passed. Early sowing helps ensure a long flowering season throughout summer and into autumn.

How to grow Salvias from seed

Sow salvia seeds on the surface of moist seed compost and lightly cover with a fine layer of compost or vermiculite. Place seed trays in a warm, bright location and keep the compost consistently moist during germination. Once seedlings are large enough to handle, pot them on individually and continue growing them in frost-free conditions until they are ready to be planted outdoors. Most salvias prefer fertile, well-drained soil and a sunny position.

How long does it take for Salvias to flower?

The flowering period depends on the variety, but many salvias grown from seed will flower during their first summer. Once established, salvias provide colour from early summer through to autumn, with many varieties continuing until the first frosts.

Why grow Salvias from seed?

Growing salvias from seed is an economical way to produce large numbers of plants for borders, containers and wildlife-friendly gardens. Salvias are especially valued for their long flowering season and their ability to attract bees, butterflies and other pollinating insects. Their upright flower spikes also add colour and structure to garden displays.

Where can you grow Salvias?

Salvias are highly versatile and can be grown in borders, raised beds, gravel gardens, cottage gardens and patio containers. Most varieties thrive in a sunny, sheltered position with well-drained soil. Many are also drought tolerant once established, making them a good choice for low-maintenance planting schemes.

Which Salvia variety should I choose?

The best salvia variety depends on your garden style and available space. Compact varieties are ideal for containers and smaller gardens, while taller forms make excellent additions to mixed borders. Salvia flowers are available in a wide range of colours, including blue, purple, pink, white and bicolours, making them easy to incorporate into a variety of planting schemes.
