Selecting the correct variety of tomato plants is the first step toward a successful crop. Tomatoes are generally categorised by their growing habit, which is either cordon or bush varieties.
To ensure your tomato plants reach their full potential, make note of these techniques used by professional growers for successful results time and time again.
Tomatoes are hungry plants that require nutrient-dense, well-draining soil. Before planting, make sure you invest in a high-quality compost for your tomato plants to truly thrive.
Tomatoes benefit from being planted deeply. Space about 45-60cm apart and dig a hole deep enough to bury two-thirds of the stem. This encourages the stem to develop extra roots, leading to a much stronger and more resilient root system that will help deliver something beautiful.
Tall cordon varieties must be supported from an early stage. Use sturdy bamboo canes or string to keep the main stem upright. Even bush varieties can benefit from a small cane to prevent branches out of the damp soil.
Tomatoes require a steady supply of moisture. For tomato pot plants, this may mean watering once or even twice daily during peak summer. Aim to keep the soil consistently moist but never waterlogged, as fluctuating moisture levels are the primary cause of fruit skins cracking.
While your soil provides initial nutrients and watering little and often is advised, supplementary feeding is vital once you spot the first yellow flowers. Switching to a fertiliser every 7-14 days can boost growth and help you achieve some delicious tomatoes too.
We recommend waiting until late spring once all risk of frost has fully passed. Nighttime temperatures should ideally be consistently above 10°C before tomato plants are moved to their final outdoor positions.
While cherry and salad varieties ripen faster, beefsteak tomatoes can be grown outdoors in the UK if placed in a very sunny, sheltered spot. If the weather isn't quite warm enough yet, then a greenhouse is advised, to ensure they have enough heat to ripen before the autumn chill.
Tomato plants typically take about 60 to 80 days to produce ripe fruit after planting, depending on the variety. Providing regular watering, feeding, and support for the growing vines will promote healthy growth and a bountiful harvest.
