When to sow Heuchera Seeds

Heuchera seeds are best sown indoors from late winter to early spring. Sow seeds in trays or pots filled with moist seed compost and place them in a bright location. Growing plants from seed requires patience, but it is a rewarding way to produce unique foliage plants for the garden.

How to grow Heucheras from seed

Sow heuchera seeds thinly on the surface of moist seed compost and lightly press them into the compost without deeply covering them. Keep the compost moist and place containers in a bright location out of direct sunlight. Once seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them into individual pots and grow them on before planting outdoors. Heucheras prefer soil that is neither too wet nor too dry and thrive in partial or dappled shade.

How long does it take for Heucheras to grow?

Heucheras are relatively slow-growing perennials and are primarily valued for their colourful foliage rather than their flowers. Plants gradually form neat, evergreen mounds and may produce delicate flower spikes during summer once established.

Why grow Heucheras from seed?

Growing heucheras from seed is an economical way to produce attractive foliage plants for borders and containers. Heucheras are valued for their long-lasting leaf colour, which can range from lime green and amber to silver, purple and near black. They also provide year-round interest and produce small flowers that are attractive to pollinators.

Where can you grow Heucheras?

Heucheras are ideal for borders, woodland gardens, shaded beds, containers and patio pots. Most varieties perform best in partial or dappled shade, although darker-leaved cultivars can often tolerate more sun. They are especially useful for brightening shaded areas with colourful foliage throughout the year.

Which Heuchera variety should I choose?

The best heuchera variety depends on your preferred foliage colour and planting scheme. Modern varieties are available in a huge range of shades, including lime green, caramel, bronze, silver, burgundy and deep purple. Compact varieties are perfect for containers and edging, while larger forms make excellent ground cover and border plants.
