Autumn planting garlic FAQs

H3: How to plant autumn garlic?

Autumn planted garlic usually produces bigger bulbs than that planted in the spring. Find a sunny, well-draining spot with alkaline soil. Plant cloves fully into the soil, with their tips a couple of centimetres below the surface, 15cm apart in rows. Leave a good foot (30cm) of space between rows so roots can establish themselves properly.

When to plant autumn garlic?

Garlic is good to go into the ground from autumn, through to the early stages of winter. With a planting season of September-December, you can stagger your crops for a maximum yield the following year. We'll send your garlic bulbs for autumn planting when they're ready to go into the ground so you have no doubt.

When to harvest autumn planted garlic?

Planting garlic in autumn will give you a harvest for the following summer. The bulbs are ready to be lifted when the foliage turns yellow and starts to droop. Clear off excess soil and leave your bulbs to dry out to maximise flavour. They can be stored for months in a cool dry place, right up until the January after lifting.
