Autumn planted garlic usually produces bigger bulbs than that planted in the spring. Find a sunny, well-draining spot with alkaline soil. Plant cloves fully into the soil, with their tips a couple of centimetres below the surface, 15cm apart in rows. Leave a good foot (30cm) of space between rows so roots can establish themselves properly.

Garlic is good to go into the ground from autumn, through to the early stages of winter. With a planting season of September-December, you can stagger your crops for a maximum yield the following year.
