Sweetcorn seeds are best sown from April to May. Seeds are usually started indoors in pots or modules to give plants a strong start before being transplanted outdoors after the risk of frost has passed. In warmer areas, seeds can also be sown directly outdoors from late May into June once the soil has warmed sufficiently.
Sweetcorn is easy to grow and produces delicious, tender cobs during late summer and early autumn. Sow seeds individually about 2.5cm deep in pots filled with quality seed compost and keep them in a warm, bright position. Once seedlings are established and frosts have passed, transplant them into fertile, moisture-retentive soil in a sunny, sheltered location. Plant sweetcorn in blocks rather than single rows to improve pollination and encourage well-filled cobs. Water regularly during dry periods and feed plants throughout the growing season for the best harvests.
Sweetcorn is typically ready to harvest around 12 to 16 weeks after sowing, depending on the variety and growing conditions. Cobs are ready when the silks turn brown and the kernels become plump and juicy. Harvest promptly for the sweetest flavour, as sugar levels begin to decline soon after picking.
Growing sweetcorn from seed is a rewarding way to enjoy exceptionally fresh cobs that are often sweeter and more flavoursome than shop-bought alternatives. A packet of seed can produce a generous crop, making sweetcorn an economical choice for vegetable gardens and allotments. With a range of varieties available, gardeners can select types suited to different harvest times, flavours and growing conditions.
Sweetcorn grows best in vegetable gardens, allotments and raised beds with plenty of sunshine and shelter from strong winds. It prefers fertile, moisture-retentive soil and benefits from regular watering throughout the growing season. Given sufficient warmth and space, sweetcorn can also be grown successfully in large containers, although plants generally perform best when grown in the ground.
The best sweetcorn variety depends on your growing conditions and harvest preferences. Some varieties are prized for their exceptionally sweet kernels, while others are valued for reliability, disease resistance or suitability to the UK climate. Growing more than one variety can help extend the harvest season and provide a steady supply of fresh cobs throughout late summer and early autumn.
