When to plant Leek Seeds

Leek seeds should be sown from January to April for a summer or autumn harvest. For an early crop, start seeds indoors in modules or trays from January to February. Direct outdoor sowing can be done from March to April once the soil has warmed up.

How to Plant Leek Seeds

Sow leek seeds thinly in seed trays or directly into well-prepared, fertile soil. Cover with a thin layer of compost or soil, water well, and keep moist. Once seedlings reach about 15 cm tall, transplant them into their final growing position, spacing them 15 cm apart in rows 30 cm apart. Plant them in deep holes (around 15 cm) to encourage long, white stems.

How long do Leek Seeds take to grow?

Leek seeds usually germinate within 10-14 days. They take around 4-6 months to fully mature, depending on the variety and growing conditions. Early varieties can be harvested from summer onwards, while later varieties can be left in the ground for a winter harvest.
