Autumn planting shallots FAQs
When to plant autumn shallots?
Autumn shallots thrive in cooler ground, so you can wait until October and November to plant them. There's no need for you to gauge when the time is right if you buy shallots from Marshalls Garden, as we'll only send your sets out when they are ready for the soil.
How to plant autumn shallots?
Shallots require a bit more room to thrive compared to onions as they grow in clumps. Plant sets 15cm to 20cm apart in rows with at least a foot (30 cm) of space between each row. If you're familiar with growing onions, the process from here is largely similar with shallots thriving when well-watered. Horticultural fleece can protect young plants from birds but should be removed when strong shoots appear. Hand-weeding the area prevents damage to the bulb.

When to harvest autumn planted shallots?
Planting autumn shallots will give you a crop to harvest the following summer. June, July and August are typically the months for lifting shallots but some varieties may still succeed when left in until September. As with onions, yellow and drooping foliage is a clear indicator that your shallots are ready for lifting.
Can you eat shallots right after harvesting?
While onions often taste better after a period of maturing out of the ground, shallots can be lifted and eaten immediately.
